EUROPA Dev Blog #2: The Drawing Board

I’ve been a bit busy this week so I haven’t had time to get a whole lot done on the game. However, I was able to draw up some designs for the enemies and interactibles in the game, which means that I can now focus on putting sprites together. I took a look at some sprites from famous shmups like Gradius and Xevious for inspiration, as I wanted my enemies to be fairly abstract and made up of simple shapes.

For my past few games I’ve stuck with a retro aesthetic using small, pixely sprites for my graphics. I didn’t think that would work very well, here, as I was hoping for the Europa sprites to be larger and more detailed. I put together a quick Europa sprite using Microsoft Publisher and compared it to the old pixel-graphic one here.

It doesn’t look fantastic, but these vector graphics are easily edited and easy to put together. I might add some shading to him later, but if I keep the sprites smooth and free of outlines, I think I can start moving towards the trancey, airy aesthetic I’m imagining. At the very least I can use Publisher to put together graphics more quickly so I can dedicate more time to solving programming issues. This is all I have to show you now, though, so I’ll get back to you when I have something more interesting.
